Practical support from problem definition to sustained improvement.
The DMAIC Approach to Continuous Improvement
DMAIC brings structure to problem solving through five stages: Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve and Control. Together they help teams establish what is happening, identify root causes, implement practical solutions and sustain the gains.
Select each stage below to see what it involves and the typical activities Damian may use.
Step 01
Define
Clarify the problem, scope and desired outcome.
Every engagement starts by establishing what needs to improve and why it matters. Damian works with the people closest to the issue to understand their perspectives, clarify the boundaries and agree on what a successful outcome would look like. The goal is to create a clear problem definition before time and resources are committed.
Typical activities
- Structured problem definition
- Stakeholder interviews
- Scope and boundary clarification
- Operational requirements review
- Success criteria development
Step 02
Measure
Collect baseline data on current performance.
Reliable decisions require reliable evidence. This stage establishes what is happening now using available data, direct observation and practical input from the team. Existing measures are reviewed, gaps are identified and a meaningful baseline is created before potential causes or solutions are considered.
Typical activities
- Evidence and data review
- Current process mapping
- Process observation
- Performance baseline development
- Measurement and data collection planning
Step 03
Analyse
Typical activities
- Root Cause Analysis
- Constraint identification
- Cause and effect analysis
- Waste and variation assessment
- Root cause validation
Step 04
Improve
Typical activities
- Solution development workshops
- Option assessment and prioritisation
- Pilot testing
- Implementation planning
- Roles and responsibilities clarification
Step 05
Control
Standardise successful changes, monitor performance, and sustain improvements.
The Control stage ensures improvements become part of normal operations. Damian works with teams to establish clear measures, ownership, review routines and standard work so results can be monitored and maintained. If performance begins to drift, the team has the information and capability to respond early and keep the improvement on track.
Typical activities
- Control plan development
- Standard work documentation
- KPI and visual management design
- Performance review routines
- Continuous improvement
Flexible by Design
Not every engagement requires the full DMAIC sequence. Some clients need focused work within one or two stages, while others need support from problem definition through to sustained improvement. The approach adapts to fit your situation, not the other way around.
Experience Behind the Approach
Damian Grow’s 30 years of operational experience has shaped the Growth Improvements approach. His work across mining, defence, shipbuilding, engineering, manufacturing, logistics and local government has exposed him to complex challenges, competing priorities and the practical realities of implementing change.
Having worked as a tradesperson, trainer, Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt, business improvement specialist and project risk adviser, Damian understands that every organisation needs a different level and form of support. He is comfortable working with frontline teams, technical specialists and senior leaders to define the real issue, test assumptions and translate evidence into practical action.
This experience sits behind every stage of Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve and Control. DMAIC provides structure without forcing the work into a rigid process. Each engagement begins where the organisation is and focuses on what will create meaningful progress.
Building Capability, Not Dependence
Damian works alongside the people closest to the work. Their knowledge, experience and involvement are essential to developing solutions that are practical, understood and more likely to last.
The goal is not simply to deliver a report or facilitate a workshop. It is to help teams strengthen how they identify problems, make decisions, implement improvements and review results. Whether the work focuses on one DMAIC stage or continues through the full sequence, the organisation should be better equipped to sustain progress.
